New Year, New Austin: Hot Headline Attractions to Visit in 2022

The new year is off to a rousing start, and as cabin fever sets in amid the frigid wintry weather, many are daydreaming of sneaking away to a sunnier locale. With its balmy winter climate, Austin is the perfect escape for travel-hungry snowbirds. If the Lone Star capital is calling your name, you’re in luck, as 2022 brings a host of new attractions for visitors to explore.

New in Entertainment

Known as the live music capital of the world, Austin boasts more live music venues per capita than any other U.S. city. Nearly every genre of music can be found in the air of the capital city, which plays host to some of the world’s premium music events including South by Southwest, Austin City Limits Music festival, and the Urban Music Fest. 2022 is set to be a headline year for Austin’s music scene, with the opening of innovative new venues such as the Moody Center: a brand-new $338 million dollar facility designed specifically for musical performances. Additionally, the beloved Nutty Brown Amphitheater is set to relocate to an expanded location in Round Rock, in the hopes of accommodating a larger variety of performances.

New in the Arts

At Native Hostel’s Museum of the Future Present, guests can explore an immersive and interactive display featuring 17 separate installations in a wide range of mediums. HOPE Outdoor Gallery is slated to expand to a new location adjacent from the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, sporting a sprawling open-air cultural center including public art, gallery spaces, food truck parking and a rooftop bar. At the Blanton Museum of Art, the Butler Sound Gallery marks the nation’s inaugural major exhibit space to feature outdoor audio displays. The sound-gallery will feature recordings of vibrant Texan wildlife, in a special exhibit created by sound art pioneer Bill Fontana.

New in Dining

Ranked as one of the best cities for foodies in 2021, Austin offers a smorgasbord of culinary traditions sure to suit every taste and craving. Visitors will never go hungry in Austin, as 2022 brings a slew of brand-new dining options to taste test. From the Caribbean restaurant Canje in East Austin to edomae-style sushi restaurant Tsuke Edomae, to the Grey Diner Bar and Grey Market spearheaded by James Beard awardee Mashama Bailey, many unique cultures and culinary traditions can be found in the streets of Austin. For food truck fanatics, the new Distant Relatives mobile barbeque can be found parked at Meanwhile Brewing Company, offering famous Texan barbeque with a unique African twist.

New in Nightlife

After a full day unraveling the mysteries of the Texan capital, unwind at any number of the city’s brand-new watering holes. At Tiki Tatsu-ya, slip into a tropical paradise decked out in lush greenery, bamboo and picturesque fountains as you select from an appetizer menu featuring items such as barbecue skewers, ribs and hot wings. At Dripping Springs Vodka & Gin, experience classic Hill Country gin in the venue’s tasting room and wine bar. Celis Brewery, one of Austin’s oldest craft creators, is welcoming guests to a vast new outdoor beer garden featuring 12,000 square feet of space, ample seating and a stage for hosting live musical performances.
