Austin On a Budget

The sun sets behind the iconic skyline of Austin, Texas, casting a warm glow over the city's unique blend of modern architecture and historic landmarks

A trip to the Lone Star’s capital doesn’t have to be expensive: you can have an exciting and memorable experience without breaking the bank. These tips will allow you to see all Austin has to offer, while remaining on good terms with your wallet.

Hike or Bike

Austin is home to some of the most beautiful nature preserves in the country. Set off on your own and explore the wild wonders of Texas by hiking, biking, or embarking on a guided tour around one of the city’s parks or dedicated nature preserves. While some trails cater to the more experienced adventurers, there are plenty of offerings for families and the casual hiker. Many venues also offer equipment for rental, or you may opt to bring your own.

Swimming

There are plenty of rivers and lakes in Austin, so swimming is one activity you can always find a time and a place for. The most popular spot is the Barton Springs Pool, where most Austenites spend their summers as they try to beat the fierce Texan heat. In addition to swimming, Barton Springs Pool offers additional recreation opportunities including kayaking, picnicking and barbeque.

Climb Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell is the area’s highest mountain, and the single highest point in all of Austin. Still, it is small enough to ascend with minimal effort or prior experience. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be able to enjoy the view and a sense of ownership over the city below you. There are also plenty of coffee shops and restaurants at the peak, allowing for a comfortable and leisurely recuperation.

Enjoy the City’s Architecture

Exploring Austin’s architectural wonders is entirely free, but is often overlooked by tourists as it requires a fair bit of planning. Still, it’s something you can do alone on foot, and guided audio tours are available to help you get around.

Austin is a city rich with history, and by studying its architecture you can explore the many stories and aesthetics of the Western United States: from conception all the way up to the present day.

Nightlife

Austin is famous for its nightlife, and for good reason. There is something for everyone to enjoy on a night out, with options ranging from wild, engaging parties to elegant fine-dining experiences. Many places within the city serve superior cocktails and wine as well. It is often overlooked that Texan wines are quite on par with those from California. Stop by one of our many local breweries and experience the unique charms of what Austin has on tap.

Take a Day Trip

It is important to remember that there is plenty more to see just outside the city! This is true regardless of what kind of vacation you plan to have in Texas. Embark on a trip to one of the region’s many lakes, farms or wildlife refuges. You’ll be sure to find something the whole family will love…and your wallet will thank you, too!
